ELECTRICAL STIMULATION

Electrical stimulation is a commonly used modality in physical therapy. Your body runs on electricity and electrical stimulation allows us to use this as a way to help healing.

What electrical stimulation does is send an electrical impulse into your body causing your muscle to contract and then relax. This in turn helps to bring increased blood circulation to the area, thus promoting tissue healing, decrease any muscle spasms by tiring out the muscle, and decrease inflammation in the area by changing the permeability of the surrounding tissue’s cell walls. In addition to these benefits, electrical stimulation also helps to overload the gateway message of pain to the brain, and therefore decrease your pain.

BALANCE & COORDINATION TRAINING

The human body is an intricate machine that needs all parts of it functioning properly in order for it to be efficient. A person’s balance is really dependent upon several factors: your inner ear canal, your overall muscle strength and length, your sensation, and your vision. If any one of these factors are affected, issues may arise with your balance.

Here at Total Performance Physical Therapy, we are accustomed to doing a full comprehensive exam to help determine what is the source of the dysfunction and then determining the best treatment plan for you. Treatment for balance disorders can range from vestibular therapy– which helps to resolve balance problems stemming from an inner ear problem, general strengthening and stretching–if related to muscular issues, or even massage and other therapeutic modalities, if related to a sensory deficit. Exercises may vary from a beginner’s level of doing some basic standing exercises, to that of athletes doing single leg jumps onto uneven surfaces. You can be assured that the best treatment plan for you will be established.

ULTRASOUND

Ultrasound has similar effects as that of Electrical Stimulation, but travels even deeper into your body. The unique characteristics of ultrasound allow it to be absorbed in the body by those structures that usually are involved in an injury–such as muscles, tendons, and ligaments–while tissues that are usually not involved in an injury such as fat tissue, do not absorb ultrasound at the same rate.

In addition to the therapeutic benefits similar to that of Electrical Stimulation, ultrasound also provides a deep tissue heating which is helpful in promoting tissue healing and decreasing muscle spasms.

THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE

Therapeutic Massage is a big part of what makes Total Performance Physical Therapy stand out from the rest of the physical therapy places out there. It is a treatment technique that is involved in 99% of our clients' regiment. The benefits of doing therapeutic massage is that it allows the therapist to really see and feel what is going on in the body.

Technology is great and certainly has its place in treatment, but there is no substitute for one-on-one, hands-on treatment. Therapeutic Massage consists of a variety of different types of massage strokes and myofascial release techniques to address issues ranging from herniated discs and arthritis, to swelling in your extremities. The benefits are endless and the results speak for themselves.

ORTHOPEDIC CONDITIONS

At Total Performance Physical Therapy we deal with a wide array of orthopedic injuries ranging from rotator cuff tears, herniated discs, fractures, to ACL tears and more. Our goal is to come up with the most efficient and effective treatment plan for your specific injuries.

Orthopedic injuries can have a vast effect on a person’s everyday living. Often times not only do orthopedic injuries cause a lot of pain, but they also can severely impede a person’s functional abilities. Depending on each individuals circumstances we focus on getting our patients pain free and moving as fast as possible. Many of the ways in which we accomplish this is by massage to the area that is affected to loosen up the muscle tissue in the surrounding region, stretching of the area to maintain good range of motion of your joints and flexibility of your muscles, electrical stimulation combined with heat/ice to reduce overall pain, and ultrasound to promote tissue healing.

Once an individual’s pain has begun to subside we not only continue the prior mentioned services but we begin an individualized exercise program geared towards their specific deficits and needs, as well as instruct them in a home exercise program that will continue to help the recovery process.
